bronies by samszym bronies by samszym
This took a long time!
I did this piece for the Bronycon documentary contest. I'm pretty proud of it and working on it taught me a ton.

a quick explanation from the prizes.org submission:
"Once I learned that copyrighted elements were not allowed I thought that it would be more meaningful to draw bronies instead of an OC. This picture is meant to represent what the brony community is, to me at least. First, We're hanging out in an aisle enjoying something society says is branded for little girls, and we are rewriting the rules so that anyone can enjoy it. Second, the show we love brings all kinds of different people together into a community of friendship, tolerance, and awesome. I've had a lot of fun and learned a ton about art from working on this picture the last ten days, and I hope my message got across. Good luck everypony!"

EDIT
I applied a color dodge layer and made the whole thing cheerier. I definitely need to work on my lighting and color. aaaaaand then I drew in some people and lines and made it even brighter

EDIT II
[link] I uploaded a process gif

I didn't win the contest, I think primarily because this piece is rather complex and detailed and unsuited to be a poster. In the judge's words "we just didn't think it had the kind of mass appeal needed" Ah well, learning and having fun making it was more important than winning.

You have more character than any of us. Let me explain why:

Generosity: You took the time out of your life to make this for no cost at all.
Kindness: You're talking about what everyone else does, not just yourself.
Laughter: The words 'and made the whole thing cheerier' come to mind.
Honesty: Displaying what you honestly think to be correct, to the fullest extent.
Loyalty: Recognizing an entire community and displaying their traits as you see them in a good light.

AND ONE MORE THING!

Humility: The ability to NOT WIN and be perfectly okay with that (Although I think you should have won, personally).

This is why Friendship is Magic. FiM forever.

This is a really thoughtful piece. It's both poignant and humorous. Your execution is also really well done! I personally love the detail, as it keeps your eyes engaged in the piece.

Moreover I really love your use of symbols in the little signs with the people on them to represent demographics.

This piece goes beyond just being about Ponies. I'm really impressed with this.

Wow, I really like how the colors make all the focus go instantly into the pink aisle! The way you can actually make the attention be immediately focused on that specific part is amazing. I also like how the whole picture has a "Break the Stereotypes" message- How you can see both men and women having fun on the aisle. I also canīt help but notice how the items and even some people outside of the aisle have logos of each gender embedded onto them. Does that hold some message too (In the case of the people)?

I also have to highlight the perspective and the detailing- The perspective is flawless and really, really neat and there are details everywhere. There is always something to see when you look at any corner of the drawing-and that is awesome. The colors are also really pretty. The interaction between the people in and outside of the aisle- The girl grabbing her friend/boyfriend/whatever onto the aisle, the people chatting in it... is also pretty well done. And I canīt help but love the pair of guys that are working together to get a pony drawing on the sign, that is just great.

Anyway, I am sorry for writing a novel here, but this deserves just so much praise. Itīs amazingly executed and I also really like the concept. This is an instant favorite and I canīpt love it enough! :)

hey, thanks a lot, I really appreciate the comment :D
I guess the people with their genders tattooed on were supposed to represent people who only enjoy things that are marketed to their own demographic and don't ever give other things a chance, or even hate on people who like different things than they're "supposed to".

Wow. I'll have to check out what could have possibly won over this. On the the analysis!

Even though the pink isle isn't directly in the front, it's the first isle noticed. It's bright and happy compared to the other isles. The ones that weren't in the pink isle look either frustrated or sad, such as the man in the way front of the picture. The man next to him in the blue isle even looks dangerous (spiked hair=sharp enough to poke an eye out). The isles seem to go on forever, fading as they get further from the pink isle. But in the pink isle, people are happy. They make eye contact and even help each other out, such as the two men in the foremost end of the pink isle. Over to the left, a woman is dragging a man in the green isle over to her side, and he seems to be smiling because of it. All different types of people are in the pink isle and they're all united by ponies. Ironically, the only person in the target demographic for the pink isle is the furthest in the background.

This picture probably says a lot more than any other submissions and this piece uses a unique (and very original) approach to depict Bronies. Even if you didn't win, this deserves an honorable mention at the very least.

This is really great! I love the feeling of all these people meeting in an aisle and already having a connection. I'm always so excited when I meet a fellow pegasister or brony!
There's definitely a feeling of 'community' in the brony aisle, especially when the other aisles are full of people who seem so....seperate from each other. I also really love the girl pulling the guy into the aisle from the green one. Welcome to the herd, green guy!

MLP-stuff aside (I'm no fan and seriously don't know what it's all about), I think the center part of the picture shows how is the "girl's toys" aisle in a real supermarket. Really sad to say :(

Huh, so many didn't get it without the description? I personally found the message really clear and cheery when I found this earlier. It reminded me of a lot of art in the books and 1k to 10k piece jigsaw puzzles I had as a kid so that was just wonderful as well.

Well even if it didn't get picked, it was lovely work and I hope you'll do something similar in the future. o/

I see myself in there, though my beard is nowhere near that white, I just have the grey hair my girlfriend has given me over the years.

And, just out of curiosity, is that an adult Calvin back there next to the one in the wheelchair?
